Two laundreywomen (persons?) were on their way to the wash-house, a
journey which required passing the local lunatic asylum. On this
particular day, an inmate escaped and seing the women, 'had his evil way
of them' after which he fled.

That night the newspaper headlines screamed out;-

"Nut screws washers and bolts"
