From staff at sucs.org Fri Mar 3 01:00:16 2023 From: staff at sucs.org (Computer Society) Date: Fri, 03 Mar 2023 01:00:16 +0000 Subject: [SUCS] Swansea University Computer Society Message-ID: Dear Computer Society Member, Thank you for signing up to the computer society for this academic year. Swansea University Computer Society (SUCS) is the longest running society at the university and pre-dates the Students' Union's current societies system, we started in 1988. SUCS is the only society to have its own dedicated room on the Singleton Park campus, to which our members enjoy 24/7 access. The society has some historical significance, both in the Swansea University community, and in wider technological accomplishments with the Linux operating system. We have a history section on our website where you may learn about how our society came to be - http://history.sucs.org/TheSociety/About . You may find out more about the society and its objectives by reading our Constitution - https://sucs.org/About/Constitution . We have experienced setbacks due to covid-19 restrictions that have seen the society grind to a halt. Unfortunately, this has put us in a situation where we have no student executive team to run the society. We still have our room, promotional material, and the infrastructure needed to revive the society. As you are somebody who has expressed an interest in our society, we invite you to help us form a student executive committee. If this interests you, please email staff at sucs.org and we will be happy to answer any questions and help you through the process of forming a committee. If you'd prefer to chat on Discord, you may join us with this link: https://discord.gg/w5duTHKj The executive roles are as follows: * President: Responsible for the overall running of the society. A spokesperson, promoting the society’s interests. Liaises with the Students’ Union. Calls meetings. Supports other committee members. Has joint responsibility with the Treasurer for society finances. * Treasurer: Responsible for financial affairs. Works with society members to determine worthwhile purchases, and liaises with the Students’ Union finance department to manage the society’s account. * Secretary: Responsible for administration. Takes minutes at meetings. Notifies members of meetings and elections. Uses the society’s admin tools to maintain membership data. * Publicity Officer: Organises and advertises events. Orders merch. Works with the President to book rooms for events. Promotes the society as a whole. They are the society’s PR person. The society has an extensive library of promotional material from past events to support this role. * Gaming Officer: Looks after our games server, deciding what games and mods are run. Organises gaming events, which aren’t necessarily computer-based. Works with the publicity officer to promote gaming events. No technical experience is required to run for these roles. The society has an extensive support network of alumni members, some of whom are current university staff, who help to keep the society going. These alumni members can help in coaching you and other members who are interested in learning how the society's systems work. If this does not interest you, we're truly sorry that the state of our society has let you down, and we wish to provide the opportunity for you to have a refund of your membership fee. If you would like to claim this refund, then please email staff at sucs.org so we can make arrangements to refund you. We will require your Swansea University student number to process a refund. If you choose not to claim a refund, your membership fee will go towards upkeep of the society's infrastructure, and any unspent funds will be held securely by the Students'. Should SUCS cease to exist, the funds would be held back by the Students' Union in case the society is revived. Best regards, Andy P. (Ex-President), and the SUCS Committee
