Hi everyone!

Today we’re announcing the long-overdue elections for SUCS. We’d like to
apologise for the delay. It’s been a slow year for the society – added
stresses from COVID made in-person events difficult to handle, and
organisational duties started to slip onto the backburner. We hope that
with vaccines rolling out, students returning to University, and life
generally becoming more ‘normal’ again, the society can start stretching
its legs once more in the new academic year.

With that out of the way, the election voting process will take place on
the week of the 24th of May (with submissions open any time before
that), and we encourage anyone interested to run. Becoming a member of
the executive team is not only a great CV piece, it’s a great experience
– it involves collaborating with friends and those who think alike on a
variety of tasks, from managing and setting up infrastructure, to
organising and taking part in events, and learning to manage an
organisation. Here are the roles available and their general
responsibilities:

* President – Coordinate and collaborate with the exec team and the
society at large.
* Secretary – Take notes and minutes during meetings, coordinate with
the other exec members on handling the I/O and paperwork for the
society, write and edit announcements.
* Treasurer – Organise and track the society’s finances, deliberate with
the rest of the exec team on where to send funds.
* Events Coordinator – Come up with events and organise them, from
bullet talks, to LAN (or WAN) parties, to hackathons.
* Marketing – Coordinate with the rest of the exec team to produce
general marketing material for events and the society as a whole –
posters, post-event promotion (photography, archiving), etc.
Alongside these roles is the returning officer(s) – essentially, members
of the former exec team to help guide you.

In reality these roles are rather fluid – managing the society is really
a collaborative effort, and it’s impossible to perfectly split the
responsibilities in this way. Every decision is a deliberative one – the
exec team is, necessarily, a team. Yet this is the general layout, from
a birds-eye view.

If you want to apply, simply send a message with your name, student
number, role you’re applying for, and a (brief) couple of sentences
relevant to you and the role so people know who they’re voting for, to
vote at sucs.org. Don’t worry about doing this too early, it’s not first
come first served. Also, you can run for multiple roles (with separate
emails), just make sure you’re interested in them.

On Monday the 24th at 10pm we’ll stop taking in new messages, those
running will be announced shortly after, and voting will run after that
(we’ll announce precise timing details soon). We can’t really stop you
from just voting for yourself, but we’d rather you didn’t!

If anything changes, we’ll let you know in the announcements channel.

Thanks for your patience, and best of luck!
