Official SU Notice – please forward to all membership lists

Dear Society Members and Society Committees,

Could you lead your Students’ Union?
Sabbatical Election 2011 are coming…. What are you doing next year?
Nominations open Thursday 3rd February, close Thurs 24th February.
Election week: 17th – 24th March 2011

As you may be aware, on February 3rd, nominations open for the 2011 Sabbatical Elections. The Students’ Union is here to make student life at Swansea the best it can possibly be. To achieve this, the SU is run by a group of students that are elected each year – the Sabbaticals.

Any student can put themselves forward for election and if they get enough votes, be given the opportunity to lead an exciting, dynamic organisation capable of achieving real change.

So if you think you could lead your SU, this is your big chance....

In March all 6 positions are up for grabs, I have attached a set of job descriptions for the 6 roles.

Full time, elected, paid jobs up for grabs. Start date: 1st July 2011

Salary: £16,000 (before tax)

All ‘Sabbatical Officers’ are Trustees of the organisation.

The President is responsible for the overall running of the Students' Union and is the lead officer for democracy, representation, the community, Student Experience and NUS. ( http://swansea-union.co.uk/content/151905/support_services/su_sabbatical_officers/president/ please note Sabb reports on left hand side for more info. )

The Societies & Services Officer is responsible for the co-ordination and support of our many societies. This is the primary function of the role however they also work with staff to look after our commercial services to make sure they run in line with our policies and values.

The Education Officer is responsible for campaigning on everything from the library to exam feedback. If it's an issue with your course, the Education Officer can help.

The Women's Officer is responsible for supporting under-represented groups on campus and takes the lead in tackling the gender inequalities that affect female students.

The International Student's Officer is responsible for supporting students from overseas to integrate into life at Swansea. They also take the lead on campaigning for fair treatment of all international students.

Full time, elected, paid jobs up for grabs. Start date: 1st July 2011

****What are the benefits of being a Sabbatical Officer?****

There is no limit to the amount of experience that can be gained from being a Sabbatical Officer, or the activities that you may be involved with during the year.

A Sabbatical Officer leads, develops, creates ideas, and works as part of team to see these ideas through. They are the top and final decision makers in the organisation and they work for you.

Being a Sabbatical is what you make of it, and you will find your year is packed with new situations, experiences, challenges, hard work and fun.

*****I'm interested! who do I talk to?*****

Below are the contact details of some people you may want to talk to about running for election. Luke is the current president and Raechel is the current Societies & Services Officer, they will be able to give you a good idea of the work of the union. They are both leaving this year so probably have many fun stories to share. Shona and Stuart are members of staff that will be running the elections. They know the rules inside and out!

The best advice though is to speak to the current Sabbs about the roles and jobs they do. If you want to be Welfare Officer, Societies Officer or any other then talk to Lance, Raechel and the rest.

Useful contacts:

Outgoing President Luke Young - president at swansea-union.co.uk
Shona Vrac - assistant returning officer - shonavrac at swansea-union.co.uk
Stuart Rice - Deputy returning officer - stuartrice at swansea-union.co.uk

******COMING SOON******

We are looking to do some open sessions and workshops for you to get a taste of potential sabb life as well as another opportunity to have your questions answered!.

Luke Young, Student President.
